Live room 1 is great for both live recording or multiple tracking. We can isolate a number of different areas if you wish to record it live. Live room 2 is perfect for a more dry sound. We can help you choose the best way to approach your recording for the best price.
If you're interested in sounding interesting, we have a wealth of professional production experience and some great vintage gear to acheive something a bit different to help you stand out.
ROOMS!
G2 has a spacious live room which can comfortably accommodate everything from a five-piece band playing together to string sections and vocal groups, recording all to a release-quality standard. Our control room is acoustically treated, enabling accurate monitoring and a great final mix.
Amps and instruments...
We have a selection of instuments and backline which is included in our rates. You will have access to amplifiers including Badcat, Fender Pro-Reverb twin, Selmer Treble and Bass 50, Marshall, Vox Ac-15, and Simms Watt amongst others, a selection of guitars, drums and basses and a great sounding 20s upright piano and harmoniums. We also have a large selection of keyboards and synthesizers ranging from the decidedly retro to the defiantly modern. If there is a specific piece of kit you wish to use we can arrange hire for you from one of our suppliers, and their cost will be included in your invoice.
Desk and media...
We record through a TOFT ATB 24 mixing desk to a Mac G5 dual-processor running Pro-Tools or to a Tascam SR-16 reel to reel tape recorder. Tape is at an additional cost to the session.
Mics...
We have a great selection of microphones to suit every need, from old ribbons to valve condensors and a few curios for good measure. As with backline, we can arrange to hire anything you specifically need. Alongside the great sounding mic pre amps on the ATB 24, we also use API and Great River, Universal Audio, Focusrite and more before sound hits the chips. All this as well as some good old fashioned outboard to help along the pure sonic intergrity.
Projects...
If you are an aspiring engineer or producer there's no better way of learning your craft than getting in at the deep end in a studio environment. We can arrange deals for down time if you wish to bring your own projects to the studio, and one of our experienced engineers will be on hand to help out should you need it.
We generally have two basic approaches to recording:
1. Nice and natural. The Steve Albini school. With this approach we record you as you are without venturing into production. Many bands nowadays favour this approach and you should know who you are.
2. Produced. We can help you realise your more ambitious ideas. For this approach it's useful to come down and have a chat about what you aim to achieve, references we can listen to and the time frame in which you are working.
The clearer your ideas before you arrive the easier it is to get the music from out of your head and out of the speakers so we encourage all our clients to visit us before the session for a cup of tea and a chat.
If you are a songwriter working alone but want your tracks supported by an experienced rhythm section, our rates include the use of our in house musicians who have played on a long list of recordings in a wide variety of styles. Again, please get in touch to discuss your needs and to hear their work.
Mixing
We believe when you pay for recording time it should be for just that - recording. The longer you get to play, the happier you'll be with the end product. Therefore, we like to leave mixing to another day. This also helps give our ears a chance to recover. However, we don't charge extra for mixing.
If you don't like the results, let us know why and we'll mix it again to get it right. Still at no extra cost. Now, you can't say much fairer than that, can you?
If you've recorded your own stuff and want it professionally mixed, we charge £20 an hour. The amount of hours you need depends on the material and how many tracks there are, so get in touch for a quote. You may like to start with one song and go from there.
